Rafting in Guanacaste

And the BEST part is Cascabel Falls

Rafting in Guanacaste? Yes! And the BEST part is Cascabel Falls

We have a very dear friend from our small town near La Fortuna at the base of the Arenal Volcano who offered to sell us his farm in Guanacaste.

He said: “You will love this property! It even has a river that runs alongside it you can go rafting on. Rumor has it, you can raft off of a waterfall along the way!”

Rafting in Guanacaste

Yes!

It turns out Guanacaste has amazing rafting on the Tenorio River located exactly half way between Arenal – or Monteverde -- and the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica. It is the perfect tour to add to your transfer from La Fortuna or the Monteverde area if you are heading to the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste like Tamarindo, Samara, Playas del Coco, etc. Or as a day tour rafting from any beach on the golden Guanacaste Coast.

We decided to buy the farm and over the past several years, we have been using our farm as the take out area for our rafting tours for our sister company Tenorio Adventure Company.

The rafting in Guanacaste is very different than the rivers for rafting in the wet & wild Northern Zone near the Arenal Volcano like the Sarapiqui River, Balsa, Toro or the Pacuare River in the Caribbean.

The Tenorio River

The Tenorio River runs through the heart of dry, arid tropical dry forest. This area of Costa Rica receives much less rainfall than the rainforests and cloud forests in other parts of Costa Rica. The nearby Costa Rica National Parks Rincon de la Vieja National Park, Santa Rosa National Park and Palo Verde National Park are comprised of tropical dry forest.

What’s cool about rafting down a river in the middle of tropical, dry forest is that they are less dense, so it’s more likely to spot diverse wildlife of the area such as monkeys, birds, iguanas and wild cats along the riverside. And because it is a dry, desert location, it might be possible to see scorpions, snakes and other lizards slithering by. In addition, the contrast of the bright green foliage against the red-rock canyon walls is truly stunning.

Cascabel Falls

However, the one thing we discovered as the main draw of the Tenorio River is the last rapid we aptly named: “Cascabel Falls” – a 12-ft waterfall drop – this is the most EXTREME whitewater rafting rapid in all of Costa Rica. The adrenaline from rafting off the top of Cascabel Falls is like no other sensation you will ever experience! You will love Cascabel Falls so much you’ll ask your guide to run it twice!

So, after several years of not taking the opportunity to go rafting on the Tenorio River, we visited again with a group of employees from our La Fortuna Office as a team building activity. I had forgotten just how beautiful the Tenorio River is and how exciting the rapids are. I was also reminded of the ride to the Tenorio River… you have to transfer through rough cowboy land on a bumpy ride in our 4x4 adventure truck, but worth the trip!

We were on the river whitewater rafting for a little over two hours. We saw toucans and howler monkeys… we descended Cascabel Falls in style (no one fell out) and hauled the boat up to do it again!... We ate delicious tropical fruit and drank some beers… we then went back to our restaurant Route One on the PanAmerican highway and had a fulfilling traditional ‘casado’ meal. The photos turned out great for a lasting memory of our adventurous day of team building.

So glad we bought the farm in Guanacaste with the river for rafting alongside it. And it’s true… the best part is Cascabel Falls!
